Southern Moravia:
Brno, Palava and Slovacko

Visit the land of young wine, old women (Vestonice Venus, a female statue 25,000 years old,) 3 sites on the UNESCO list of human heritage, with rich folklore traditions expressed in several festivals and romantic evenings in ancient wine cellars.
Southern Moravia is a pleasant wine producing region of rolling hills and flat river valleys, located conveniently between Vienna (Wien, Austria) and Brno (Czech Republic) on the ancient Amber Road.

Kromeriz baroque chateau and beautiful gardens were owned by archbishops of Olomouc. Their collections include paintings by Titian, Veronese, Cranach, Van Dyke etc. (UNESCO Heritage list) Kromeriz
Brno Brno - 2nd largest city in Czech Republic, 2 hrs from Prague by freeway. Castle, churches dated to 13th century, Moravian Karst caves, G. Mendel museum, Austerlitz battlefield... medallion High above the Morava river valley, 13th century Buchlov castle guards the Brno road, the later chateau of its lords, Buchlovice and (a reminder of 863AD christianization of Great Moravia?) road Vlcnov Ride of Kings is a folk historical spectacle dating back supposedly to 1469, performed last Sunday in May to start a festival in this village home of several folk dance and music groups. Vlcnov
road 50 km ~ 32 miles Straznice with photogenic bastions hosts an annual Intl. Folklore Festival in late June. Open air museum presents over 60 historical farm structures, blacksmithy and various winemaking tools. wine press
road Lednice For 700 years the Liechten-
stein family was transforming a river flood plain south of their Lednice chateau into
a unique 'cultural landscape' seamlessly merging manmade structures and art with the
Mikulov Mikulov: small town with a castle / chateau on the southern slope of Palava Protected Landscape Area, an UNESCO heritage site. 25,000 yrs old Vestonice Venus was found nearby. Valtice surrounding land, connecting their chateau to the original family seat Valtice. The entire area is now a UNESCO heritage site. Great wine cellars and clean, but not very comfortable hotel.
road 70 km ~ 44 miles
Vienna Austrian capital Vienna (Wien) and Prague have the most convenient airports for trips to Central Europe. Only few flights land at Brno.
