Thank you for purchasing one of our Gaia Guides!

INSTALLATION

NONE! The software runs from the copy protected CD-ROM. No parts are permanently copied to your system. If you have Autostart enabled, it should start automatically. If not, hit [START], then [RUN] and [BROWSE] to your CD-ROM drive. There you select the file GAIA****.EXE and run it. On each startup there are 3 sections:

  • series introduction,
  • country introduction (accessible also from the main screen)
  • and navigation description.
If you get tired of them, just hit [ESC} or Ctl-Q to skip over each one.

If you don't like our button sounds, please just turn down sound volume - yes, the knob on your speakers will do just fine!

Space and marketing considerations forced us to use limited video with Indeo 3.2 compression only. If you either have Intel Indeo(R) Video 5.11 codec or newer installed, or if you want to bother to install it from the INDEO5 folder on this CD-ROM complying with Intel's licensing requirements, you can watch better copies and a couple of extra videos recorded with DV format. The 32xxxx files are original Intel Indeo(R) 3.2 compressed versions, you will want to try the others. The Wedge is awsome! All video files are the copyrighted property of Gaia InterMedia.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The guides require at least the following PC-compatible computer to run:

  • 100Mhz Pentium(R) class CPU
  • 16MB of RAM (3 largest panoramas may not appear)
  • 4x speed CD-ROM drive
  • SVGA video card capable of 16bit High color (thousands of colors) at 640*480 bits or higher resolution
  • Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me or newer.
  • It will NOT run on Microsoft Windows 3.1 or older, or on other operating systems!
For decent graphics performance we recommend at least:
  • 200Mhz Pentium(R) class CPU or faster
  • 32MB of RAM
  • 16x speed CD-ROM drive
  • SVGA video card capable of 16bit High color (thousands of colors) at 640*480 bits or higher resolution
Sound card and Internet connection are recommended to get the full use of all the features of our guides. Enable automatic Internet connection to allow the software to take you directly to the web sites you choose while using the guide.

TROUBLESHOOTING

GUIDE DOES NOT START: please check that Autostart is enabled. It is 'conveniently' hiding probably under START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - SYSTEM - CDROM - Auto insert notification. If that does not help, use START - RUN - BROWSE and navigate to your CD-ROM drive to find the .exe file.

SLUGGISH PERFORMANCE
or WEIRD COLORS (unless you like the "painterly effect" ;-)
There are several possible causes:

  • your PC does not meet the minimum requirements
  • video card is not set to 16bit High Color (thousands of colors.) Please exit the Guide, reset the color depth, restart your computer if required, and then restart the Guide.
  • notebook / laptop PCs often have underperforming CD-ROM drives, video cards and their drivers, whatever the specs may say.
  • another software with high system requirements is running
  • you bought a pirated copy

SOUND CLICKS: sorry, that is between MS Windows, Direct Sound, Macromedia Director and your sound card drivers. One day they'll learn to cooperate better. We used professional recording facility and the sounds themselves are very clean.

SYSTEM CRASH: CRASH?!? Well, yes, it does happen. We did test the guides on 3 continents on over a hundred PCs from 60MHz Pentiums with 16MB of RAM on to 800MHz Athlons. Only 1 computer crashed (repeatedly - an old Fujitsu notebook) due to system overload caused by inexplicable multiple starts of the guides. Please e-mail us: for instructions if it happens to you!

I CAN'T MAKE A COPY: sorry, the guide is copy protected. If you damage your guide, please mail the damaged copy to us for prompt replacement. If your dog ate it, DO NOT repeat: DO NOT! send us the dog! ;-)
